Born to legendary percussionist Mor Thiam, Akon was grateful for his family musical background. But his interest over music was actually started when he got to high school.

The Hip-hop artist who is born Aliaune Thiam, grew up in Senegal before he and his family eventually settled in New Jersey. When Akon was hanging around with Jersey's thugs crowd and became popular over his bravery in fighting, he actually began to enjoy R&B music. Since his thug-friends were not, Akon started writing his own songs without anyone knowing.

Since high school, Akon was labeled 'bad boy.' He did everything against the school regulation, thus, he was kicked out after busted for selling guns, bullet and test questions for every test. He moved out and attended at Bayonne High School.

At age 18, Akon was charged for being involved in a car theft operation and put in jail for year and a half. When he was set free, Akon began to take his music talent seriously. He launched his debut album "Trouble" in 2004. "TROUBLE evolved from the struggles I went through and what I did and am still doing to correct those things," says Akon about the album.
The album's single "Locked Up" has led Akon to win a Sixshot Award for Best Single of 2004 shared with rapper Styles P. Meanwhile, his other single "Lonely," which was actually Bobby Vinton's old track entitled "Mr. Lonely," topped the UK charts in 2005.

In 2005, Akon's next album "Trio," includes single "Ghetto," was offered for sale.

Akon's personal appeal and ability to reach a listener is a part of his whole package: a package that includes, most importantly, his distinctive vocals and a relaxed singing style. It is as though he is speaking to you as he sings in a very intimate manner. "When I sing the sound comes from the mood that I am in. These records are coming straight from the heart," Akon divulges.

Genuine and honest, Akon's music is a step in a new direction: a trajectory that will lead us on a delightfully fulfilling path. Says Akon, "When I'm on the mic, I'm just giving the listener a part of me." Be prepared to receive it.
